A Note from our New Rabbi:
Rabbi Jennifer B. Flatté
Dear Temple Beth El,
I am looking forward to joining your community in August when we shall all have a chance to learn and to grow together. Since most of us have not yet had a chance to meet, I can understand that you are probably a little curious about me.
You could read my resume and find out where I've been. You could read my personal statement and find out how I think about being a rabbi. So what else should I tell you?
I am, heart and soul, a teacher and I will study Torah with anyone who will hold still. Well, holding still is optional. I believe that Judaism is timeless and relevant and can be a natural part of one's daily, modern, ordinary life. I believe that community is essential - and that community comes in all shapes and sizes. And I operate on the basic principle that every good question deserves another good question.
For those who really want to know where I've been -
I was ordained as a Reform Rabbi in 1995 from the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, first receiving a Master's in Hebrew Letters. In addition to my student days in Arizona, I've been a Congregational Rabbi in Colorado and a College Chaplain at Grinnell College, Iowa. I've been a "Visiting Rabbi" in congregations in and around Iowa and I also work with those whose needs are not met within the congregational system. I have yet to live in the same community in which I have served as Rabbi.
Three years earlier, I received my Master's in Religious Studies from UC Santa Barbara where I studied language, symbolism and communication in the Hebrew Bible. I currently teach Biblical Hebrew at the University of Iowa. I also teach in a community setting on topics relating to both Judaism and the Hebrew Bible.
I received my B.A., with honors, in Folklore & Mythology from Harvard University and have since made the transition from studying tales to recounting them.
I am also a website developer and a perpetual student of languages both ancient and technical.
I am always the very proud mother of 4. (Devra, my eldest daughter, will head to college in the fall; my only son, Shecharya, is 15, my middle daughter Naftalia will become Bat Mitzvah in September, and my youngest daughter, Meirav, is 8).
L'shalom,
